Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund y Bayern München vs Barcelona. Ese fue el regalo que nos dio el sorteo de la Champions League para semifinales y desde el primer día se comenzó a hablar de ‘la final soñada’. Pero como hace un año, ni siquiera tenemos el 50% de ese partido. En Wembley se hablará alemán.

En su momento, tanto el Real Madrid como el Barcelona se encomendaron a Cristiano Ronaldo y a Lionel Messi para superar los obstáculos y estar el 25 de mayo en Londres. Pero ni CR7 ni Leo aparecieron. Messi no llegaba bien desde París y estuvo desaparecido en el duelo de ida. En el de vuelta ni jugó y el Barca quedó fuera de la Champions sin meter un solo gol en semifinales.

‘Por encima de Iker Casillas está el Real Madrid’.

No son palabras de José Mourinho, son del mismo Iker.

A pesar de estar relegado al banquillo, Casillas fue el encargado de dar la cara en conferencia de prensa tras la dura derrota ante el Dortmund. Habló de su relación con Mou y dijo lo que ya todos sabemos: que es un problema personal. Por lo demás, animó a los aficionados y al club merengue a creer en la remontada.

Ni una señal de debilidad, ni un poco de berrinche, nada. Casillas no le da el gusto a Mourinho, se limita a ser un líder aunque no esté jugando. Es un gigante dentro y fuera de la cancha.

El primer partido de Josep Guardiola como DT en liga fue ante el Numancia, en el estadio Los Pajaritos. El Barca no jugó mal en esa ocasión, pero perdió 1-0. Aunque no dio mala imagen, nadie se esperaba que ese equipo se convertiría en el huracán que arrasó con todos en la temporada 2008-2009.

Ese Barcelona llegó a desconcertar a todos, goleaba a quien se le pusiera en frente y no se detuvo hasta que levantó los seis títulos por los que jugó. En la Champions se enfrentó al Bayern München y los alemanes fueron una víctima más: 4-0 en el Camp Nou y 1-1 en el Allianz Arena.

Hoy muchos esperan resultados similares, pero a favor del club alemán. El Bayern llega como gran favorito a la serie de semifinales que comienza en la casa de Jupp Heynckes y los suyos.

A header that he had no business getting to, and finishing with pinpoint precision.

A penalty kick that was as deceptive as it was authoritative.

Didier Drogba possibly finished his Chelsea career like few players could ever do. Like John Elway winning a Super Bowl during his farewell tour, like Ray Bourque’s last stand for a Stanley Cup, and Michael Jordan’s last hurrah for an NBA title. (Lets all just act like the MJ in Washington never happened, okay? Okay.) Drogba ended the game on his terms, with the fate of the world’s toughest club competition resting on the tip of his toe and a legacy who could go down as the greatest modern era African footballer and greatest foreign-born Chelsea footballer of all-time.

John Laguna does work.

Laguna, Fox Deportes main play-by-play announcer since 1998, is on the scene in Munich at Allianz Arena as the UEFA Champions League Final is just moments away. The man has covered some of the biggest games in the greatest venues, and Saturday’s setting will not be any different. That’s what 14 years of experience will do for you.

I was fortunate to get the chance to chop it up with voice of Deportes and get his thoughts on the game, the legacy of Didier Drogba, and a reflection on John Terry’s absence in the lineup.

FOX Deportes: Can the homefield advantage for Bayern work against them in such a pivotal championship match?

John Laguna: I think the home field advantage will be huge for Bayern Munich,  they know all the corners and condition of the stadium, the field, the locker rooms, everything is just more familiar. You feel more comfortable at home than your opponent.

Deportes: Which team do you think will be more affected by the yellow card suspensions?

Laguna: No doubt Chelsea, not only because its four players down for Chelsea versus three for Bayern, but because Chelsea loses their captain (John Terry) and the second best defender in (Branislav) Ivanovic. Ramirez is also a key player in midfield that can’t be replaced.

Deportes: Is this truly the end of Didier Drogba’s career at Chelsea? And if so, where will he stand historically with a CL win?

Laguna: Drogba is going to be considered the best foreign player in Chelsea’s history, not because of the sheer number of goals he’s scored, but for the importance of these goals. Many of those goals came in the biggest games.

Deportes: If Chelsea loses this match, how much blame should John Terry receive?

Laguna: No doubt John Terry will be a significant loss for Chelsea, but he can’t be blamed if Chelsea loses. There is capability in the people that will replace him, but his absence will be seriously felt.

Deportes: How much can Gary Cahill and David Luiz truly provide after being out with hamstring injuries?

Laguna: Luiz and Cahill are international players, so I don’t think they will be threatened on the pitch.  They both are qualified to give a great performance as long as they are healthy.
