Chavez Jr. – Martinez rematch must happen ASAP

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

Here’s what we learned Saturday night when the big fights in Las Vegas had ended:

1.     Saul “Canelo” Alvarez remained undefeated at 41-0-1, and now the 22-year-old deserves a true test of his ability. Just who will provide that test remains to be seen, but Alvarez, as he did in May after a beatdown of Shane Mosley, made it clear that he wants Floyd Mayweather or Miguel Cotto in the super welterweight category.  Is Alvarez ready? At 22, one might think not. But with 42 pro fights, at same point he has to fight one of the best. Josesito Lopez was not that on Saturday. It’s time to give Alvarez what he wants. It’s going to happen eventually, why not sooner than later?

2.     Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. waited too long to unleash the knockout power he clearly has. But what a finish to that fight with Sergio Martinez. One had to wonder what Chavez was thinking, letting Martinez dance around and jab and move and not going after him until the end. Chavez is no longer undefeated, but he took a lot of shots from Martinez and also delivered them. Chavez hurt Martinez badly. Reports said Martinez suffered a broken hand, needed stitches above his eye and that he tore knee ligaments.

Canelo vs. Lopez is OK, but just OK

By Jose M. Romero/ @RomeroJoseM

For Fox Deportes

Reports are everywhere saying Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Golden Boy Promotions’ golden boy of the moment, will face Josesito – let’s call him “Jawbreaker” – Lopez on Sept. 15 at the MGM in Las Vegas. And now those reports appear to have been confirmed.

The fight is scheduled for Showtime pay-per-view.

While Golden Boy had yet to officially announce the fight as of Wednesday afternoon  – it was busy hyping the Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia bout this Saturday – Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer did confirm the card to Ring Magazine. Canelo-Lopez is at this point happening on the same night as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez for the WBC middleweight championship at the nearby Thomas & Mack Center, live on rival HBO PPV.

“Vicious” Victor Ortiz is the new…

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

For FOX Deportes

I felt a little bad for Victor Ortiz, watching the end of his fight against Josesito Lopez.

Here on my phone was the picture of a man bewildered, stung, hurt (literally) shocked. He’d just had his jaw broken by a guy you can’t help but be happy for, Lopez.

I cautioned that this could happen in a post last week leading up to the fight. I pointed out that Lopez had nothing to lose and so much to gain, so much motivation to win Saturday’s fight against Ortiz at the Staples Center in L.A.

Lopez was the patsy, the fall guy not given a chance in you-know-where to win the fight. He was losing on the scorecards when he uncorked a punch that made Ortiz open his mouth, it landed with so much authority.  And Lopez was still losing when the unbelievable happened.

Ortiz-Lopez fight in L.A. promises to be meaningful

By Jose M. Romero /@RomeroJose

For FOX Deportes

OK, so you’re Josesito Lopez. You’re an L.A. area guy, 27 years old, you teach boxing classes in Riverside, Calif., and as a professional, you happen to be pretty good at boxing yourself.

You like the Dodgers, who had you throw out a ceremonial first pitch before a recent game. You were pretty happy when the L.A. Kings won the Stanley Cup this year. You’re making ends meet, and then suddenly you are asked to fill in for an injured fighter – a big-name one in Andre Berto – gain a few pounds to be a full welterweight and step in the ring against “Vicious” Victor Ortiz in front of your hometown fans at the Staples Center.

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. You’re 29-4 with 17 knockouts, and you fought Jessie Vargas – an undefeated rising star who just signed with Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotion – to a split-decision loss in Las Vegas last September, yet you feel disrespected.

Alvarez vs. Ortiz – Golden Boy puts boxing back in good place

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

For FOX Deportes

You can’t help but respect Golden Boy Promotions’ timing on this one.

While Bob Arum at rival Top Rank was busy seeking a government investigation into the judges’ decision that went against his fighter, Manny Pacquiao, in a loss to Timothy Bradley on Saturday in Las Vegas, Oscar de la Hoya’s company seized the moment and announced a blockbuster card for Sept. 15 at the MGM.

It’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the WBC junior middleweight champion, defending his title against Victor Ortiz, who fight fans last saw getting clocked by Floyd Mayweather in the infamous “Protect yourself at all times” bout last September. Ortiz was KO’d, and hasn’t fought since.  But he’s back to training for another fight.

Current Golden Boy to face toughest test in Williams

By Jose M. Romero
For Fox Deportes

The current golden boy of Golden Boy Promotions is actually a redhead, but boxing fans know him as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Fresh off his convincing win over an aged but very game Shane Mosley on Cinco de Mayo in Las Vegas, Alvarez is headed back to Sin City on that other (and more significant) Mexican independence holiday, September 16 weekend, to fight Paul “The Punisher” Williams on Sept. 15 at the MGM Grand.

Canelo Alvarez learns from win over Mosley

By Jose M. Romero

For Fox Deportes

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez knew Shane Mosley would be a tough opponent. He even admitted being surprised at how strong the 40-year-old is.

That strength and crafty veteran experience wasn’t enough to stop Alvarez, who remained undefeated at 40-0-1 and more importantly to him, stopped Mosley’s improbable winning streak against Mexicans fighters.

Weigh-in almost as big a show as fight night

By Jose M. Romero

For Fox Deportes

LAS VEGAS  — The fights are Saturday, but the hype reached a near fever pitch Friday afternoon at the official weigh-in for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-“Sugar” Shane Mosley bouts.

The public was allowed into half of the MGM Grand Garden Arena to get a short glimpse of the pugilists, and fans of Mayweather Jr., Alvarez and Cotto roared for their man while Mosley seemed to have the fewest supporters.

Canelo vs. Sugar is experience vs. experience on Cinco de Mayo

By Jose M. Romero

For FOX Deportes

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. “Sugar” Shane Mosley is more than just a matchup of guys with sweet nicknames. It’s a huge test for Alvarez and a chance for Mosley, 40, to show he’s still got it when it comes to the sweet science.

Officially, this fight for the WBC super welterweight championship is the top undercard bout on the Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto lineup on Cinco de Mayo at the MGM Las Vegas. But Canelo-Mosley is a main event unto itself in reality.
