Canelo vs. Lopez is OK, but just OK

By Jose M. Romero/ @RomeroJoseM

For Fox Deportes

Reports are everywhere saying Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Golden Boy Promotions’ golden boy of the moment, will face Josesito – let’s call him “Jawbreaker” – Lopez on Sept. 15 at the MGM in Las Vegas. And now those reports appear to have been confirmed.

The fight is scheduled for Showtime pay-per-view.

While Golden Boy had yet to officially announce the fight as of Wednesday afternoon  – it was busy hyping the Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia bout this Saturday – Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer did confirm the card to Ring Magazine. Canelo-Lopez is at this point happening on the same night as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez for the WBC middleweight championship at the nearby Thomas & Mack Center, live on rival HBO PPV.

“Vicious” Victor Ortiz is the new…

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

For FOX Deportes

I felt a little bad for Victor Ortiz, watching the end of his fight against Josesito Lopez.

Here on my phone was the picture of a man bewildered, stung, hurt (literally) shocked. He’d just had his jaw broken by a guy you can’t help but be happy for, Lopez.

I cautioned that this could happen in a post last week leading up to the fight. I pointed out that Lopez had nothing to lose and so much to gain, so much motivation to win Saturday’s fight against Ortiz at the Staples Center in L.A.

Lopez was the patsy, the fall guy not given a chance in you-know-where to win the fight. He was losing on the scorecards when he uncorked a punch that made Ortiz open his mouth, it landed with so much authority.  And Lopez was still losing when the unbelievable happened.

Ortiz-Lopez fight in L.A. promises to be meaningful

By Jose M. Romero /@RomeroJose

For FOX Deportes

OK, so you’re Josesito Lopez. You’re an L.A. area guy, 27 years old, you teach boxing classes in Riverside, Calif., and as a professional, you happen to be pretty good at boxing yourself.

You like the Dodgers, who had you throw out a ceremonial first pitch before a recent game. You were pretty happy when the L.A. Kings won the Stanley Cup this year. You’re making ends meet, and then suddenly you are asked to fill in for an injured fighter – a big-name one in Andre Berto – gain a few pounds to be a full welterweight and step in the ring against “Vicious” Victor Ortiz in front of your hometown fans at the Staples Center.

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. You’re 29-4 with 17 knockouts, and you fought Jessie Vargas – an undefeated rising star who just signed with Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotion – to a split-decision loss in Las Vegas last September, yet you feel disrespected.
