It’s a good day to be Mexicano (Americano)

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

For FOX Deportes

I celebrated Mexico’s historic 2-1 Olympic gold-medal victory like countless (OK, maybe hundreds) of Americans of Mexican descent did: over some cold pizza.

What’s more American than that?

I skipped the menudo con tortillas parties at the crack of dawn at local restaurants and stayed home to watch Mexico v. Brazil. I watched the second half by myself. And on Saturday, like every day, it was a good day to have Mexican blood.

Mexico’s win, you see, wasn’t just for Mexico. It was for Mexicans and those of Mexican descent everywhere. It made those of us in the multi-generational Chicano category proud, too. For those young men on that medal stand in London, bouquets of flowers in their hands and gold around their necks, it was the moment of a lifetime. And whether you’re Mexican from Guadalajara or Portland, Ore., it was a beautiful moment, too.

U.S., Mexico cruise to qualifier wins, but tougher tests await

By Jose M. Romero /@RomeroJoseM

For FOX Deportes

As expected. the United States and Mexico were far too much for their respective World Cup 2014 qualifier opponents, both CONCACAF powers winning by 3-1 scores Friday nght.

Both teams could have scored more often. The U.S. spent much of a rainy night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in the attacking third of Antigua and Barbuda and probably should have had at least four goals.

Herculez Gomez clanged a shot off the cross bar in the 58th minute, but he got his much-deserved goal in the 71st minute after two of his shots were blocked. The third try went into the net to give the U.S. a commanding two-goal lead.

World Cup qualifying begins for U.S., El Tri.

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

For Fox Deportes

The World Cup is two years away, but the journey to Brazil 2014 officially begins Friday throughout the soccer world.

In our region, CONCACAF, the two traditional powers should be there when it’s all said and done, those being Mexico and the U.S. These things are never a given, of course, but Mexico enters qualifying a very confident bunch and as the clear No. 1 team in North America.
