El Cinco: Five Takeaways From USA Vs. Argentina

By Eduardo Maisonet, III / @edthesportsfan

For FOX Deportes

1. USA Defeats Argentina 86-80: In a game where USA went on extreme runs of hot and cold, the Americans were able to fend off the Argentinians for a 6-point victory in Barcelona. Led by Kevin Durant’s 28 points, USA seemed to live behind the shortened three-point line, and KD kept filling it up from range. Kobe Bryant chipped in 18 and LeBron James put up another 15 points to carry Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s squad.

Argentina’s 3 biggest NBA stars also did well in pacing the attack, as Manu Ginobili was the team’s scoring leader with 23 points. Carlos Delfino and Luis Scola put in 15 and 14, respectively.

2. Argentina Wasn’t Concerned About Winning, I Think: There was still time for Argentina to win at the end of the game, as they were only down 6 with 35 seconds left and they ran a half-court set play and drained the majority of the shot clock. It was weird. Of course, it was an exhibition, so maybe Argentina wasn’t really interested in winning the game. Which is something totally Un-American.

USA must be ready for physical test from Olympic opponents

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

For FOX Deportes

One thing USA Olympic men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski would like to see from his team going into the London Games is defensive intensity. He broke it down with the points Brazil scored in four quarters against the Americans.

“If this team doesn’t have that, we’re going to get scored on,” Coach K said. “Twenty-seven points in 10 minutes and 42 in 30, it’s a huge difference.”

The squad of NBA stars went from out of sync in the first quarter to forcing turnover after turnover throughout the rest of the game. The USA won 80-69.

El Cinco: For Coach K and Team USA, Carmelo’s Starting but Durant’s Closing

By Eduardo Maisonet, III / @edthesportsfan

For FOX Deportes

For five days, I’ve been fortunate to travel with Team USA Basketball and Nike as they put on the spectacle known as the World Basketball Festival in Washington, D.C. For something that started back in 2010 in NYC, this event has evolved into a celebration of performance and culture that surrounds the game of basketball. Now in 2012, the World Basketball Festival has expanded the circuit to London, Paris, Barcelona and D.C.

WBF 2012 in D.C. featured the USA Basketball Men’s and Women’s National Teams as their training and practice was open to the public, especially the service men and women in the DMV area. Nike and Converse held community events at Barry Farms and Banneker  Park that included refurbished basketball courts, free concerts and brand experiences with the general public. Good times were had, connections were made, and now we’re ready to see if Team USA can bring home the gold in a few weeks.

The 2016 USA Basketball Team Will Be Better Than 1992 and 2012 (If LeBron Plays, That Is)

By Eduardo Maisonet, III / @edthesportsfan

For FOX Deportes

The narrative has been exhaustive for the last couple of days, ever since Kobe Bryant was goaded into a dialogue that challenged the thought that the “Dream Team” of 1992 could never be beaten. That the 2012 Team USA squad currently constructed could possibly beat the Dream Team sounded preposterous, but then the writers, bloggers and fans took the narrative into the sports bars, the water cooler and the barbershop and now the narrative has gotten totally out of control.

So of course, after I tried to refrain from jumping into the discussion, in fear that I’d lose my mind and become a prisoner of the moment, have revisionist history, and distort my memory of that ‘92 team and what this ‘12 squad could truly be capable of….I decided to hop in the time machine and go back to the future.

Excuse me as I put on my NikeMags real quick.

Just hear me out on the list of players and their ages that could possibly make up the 2016 Team USA Roster:
