Baseball history in Arizona: A doubleheader

Baseball history will be made in Phoenix Wednesday when the Arizona Diamondbacks host the Miami Marlins in the first doubleheader ever for the D-backs at Chase Field.

A doubleheader in Arizona? The weather isn’t the reason. It’s always sunny and super hot at this time of year, and even if there’s a dust storm (locally known as a “haboob”), the retractable roof is closed and voila, we have baseball and a climate- controlled atmosphere.

Miami didn’t have a rainout nor a makeup date because their brand new ballpark was unavailable, so that’s not the reason. The Diamondbacks didn’t have to cancel a game against the Marlins and make it up on their end, either.

Diamondbacks target Latino fan base with promotion

PHOENIX – The masked man in the red-and-black cape and red-and-black Arizona Diamondbacks shirt is everywhere.

His likeness is found on billboards and bus stops ad signs. The real-life human version charges around Chase Field, popping up in the broadcast booth for appearances or on the field with the team’s official mascot, D-Baxter. Forbidden from speaking – in the tradition of old-school Mexican lucha libre performers – the D-backs Luchador (on Twitter @DbacksLuchador) has appeared in the press box messing with media members, dancing in between innings at the stadium, even on TVs in homes throughout the area.
