Astros lead MLB in most Latinos on active roster

There’s a youth movement going on in Houston, whether the Astros and their fans like it or not.

Houston entered Saturday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with the worst record in baseball, 34-60, 19 ½ games out of first place in the NL Central. Hope for a winning season has long since gone away.

But at the heart of the youth movement are many of the 11 Latino “peloteros” on Los Astros’  25-man active roster. That number represents the most of any team in the major leagues after a trade on July 20 brought the total to 11, including newly acquired reliever Francisco Cordero.

The youngest Latino Astro is 5-foot-5 second baseman Jose Altuve.  The native of Venezuela is in his first full season in the majors, and was named an NL All-Star.
