There’s Only One Gervinho, and You Either Love Him Or Hate Him

By Eduardo Maisonet, III / @edthesportsfan

Midway through Arsenal’s contest versus Manchester City on Sunday, with the Sky Blues down 1-0, a bit of brilliant play took place. From Mikel Arteta to Santi Carzola in the midfield sprung a Gunners’ forward open on the right side, streaking towards the goalie with a chance to put one in the back of the net.

That forward was Gervinho, and all of Arsenal’s supporters gasped with terror in their minds and hope in their hearts.

I just so happened to be watching the Gunners face Man City with a large legion of Gooners. More specifically, I was at Maggie McGarry’s, where the Bay Area Gooners supporters club of Arsenal meet up on the weekend to watch their favorite squad do battle with their foes. There were probably 100 Arsenal supporters to possibly 10 (being kind) City supporters in the bar at 8am, drinking beer and being rowdy.  It was awesome. City was up 1-0 after Johann Lescott’s header found the back of the net off of a set piece in the first half. Arsenal fans were nervous, as their undefeated record was now on the line and their defense had been infiltrated for just the second time this season. Steve Gould had a case of the sads. Now was the test for the Gunners, as they faced a deficit against the league’s top team, could they respond?

Olivier Giroud Asks For Patience, Arsenal Fans Laugh To Hide Anger

By Eduardo Maisonet, III / @edthesportsfan

Some could look at Arsenal’s 0-0 tie with Sunderland as a positive.

“Hey, at least we got a point. Right?”

That person would probably get thrown off a cliff if he said that around enough Arsenal fans.

It would also sound like someone who didn’t actually watch Saturday’s opening contest of the 2012-13 Premier League season. Yes, Arsenal did what they always do. They thoroughly controlled possession (70%) for the majority of the game, they put up a ghastly number of shots (23) at the goal and nullified any counter-attack by a hapless Sunderland side. Yet, per usual, Arsenal was unable to actually score a goal on Saturday and the double zeroes on the scoreboard meant another terrible draw at Emirates Stadium.

Redskins going max protect on Griffin

By AJ Perez

Courtesy of FOX Sports

This region’s expectations for a charismatic rookie quarterback with braids, “Seize the moment” scribbled on his cleats and the burden of an NFL franchise on his back can be summed up by 12-year-old James Ricks, a Washington Redskins fan from Riverdale, Md.

“RG3 is a legend!” Ricks exclaimed before his mother challenged that assertion as they walked into training camp this week.

Robert Griffin III — the reigning Heisman Trophy winner for whom the Redskins mortgaged a good portion of their future drafts to select at No. 2 overall in April’s NFL Draft — has certainly swelled what’s anticipated for a team that missed the playoffs each of the past five seasons and was 5-11 in 2011.

Van Persie to Man U. shouldn’t impact Chicharito’s role on club

By Jose M. Romero / @RomeroJoseM

For Fox Deportes

In European soccer (football), the rich typically take from the poor and most of the same big-money clubs are at the top of the table year after year.

Now, the rich is poised to take from the rich. English Premier League power Manchester United is on the cusp of landing 29-year-old Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie, which will trigger a chain reaction of other roster decisions for both sides.

Apparently Man U. feels it must have four quality strikers. It will have five with Van Persie – Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov – but Berbatov is all but out the door.

Berbatov, at 31, is the old man of the group. Rooney is the constant, a pillar in English soccer at 26. Welbeck, 21, is the future and Hernandez, at 24, still has many years of the game in front of him.
