NFL Week 1: Could the NFC West be this wild?

Going into the 2012 NFL season, the NFC West was one Super Bowl contender, two contenders for second place and the rebuilding St. Louis Rams.

On a wild opening Sunday of NFL action, fans learned why the San Francisco 49ers will most likely be in the playoffs with a shot at the Super Bowl. But they also saw two pretty good defenses in the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, and a St. Louis Rams team that might not win much, but will make some games closer than expected.

The 49ers took down the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday in a game not many thought they would win. Frank Gore ran strong, Randy Moss (remember him?) caught a touchdown pass and the Niners defense contained the dangerous Packers offense. And according to TMZ – someone explain to me why that site is digging up dirt in sports? – Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers lost a bet to one of the singers from the R&B group Boyz II Men and has to wear 49ers quarterback Alex Smith’s jersey!

Players got it right voting Aaron Rodgers the NFL’s best player

It’s safe to assume that, if he could, Aaron Rodgers would likely trade last season’s NFL most valuable player award for a better performance and victory in the playoffs over the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.
 
However, individual accolades will have to continue to suffice, as the Green Bay Packers quarterback garnered another one in being voted No. 1 by his peers on NFL Network’s “The Top 100: Players of 2012”.
 
“It’s very humbling, it’s a great honor,” Rodgers said Wednesday night on NFL Network. “Any time you’re recognized with that professional respect from your peers, that really means a lot to me. So I’ve got to thank them for the votes.”
